Best Android Apps for Land Surveyors

Choose the right tool for survey calculations, GIS mapping and RTK fieldwork. Four Android options, with the practical checks to make before your next job.

How this guide was prepared

We develop Land Surveyor by APPNEST. This comparison uses our app documentation and the official product pages linked below. We have not field-tested the competing apps side by side. Recommendations are by workflow, with no overall winner or accuracy score.

Which app fits your surveying work?

The best Android apps for land surveyors solve different problems. A calculation toolkit helps with coordinates and engineering geometry. A GIS collector organises features and attributes. Instrument software manages observations and stakeout with supported equipment. Choose the workflow first, then check the app.

A closer look at the four apps

QField — field collection with QGIS projects

QField is a useful option when your office workflow already revolves around QGIS. It supports geospatial data capture, forms and project synchronisation. Its open-source app is available on Android.

Choose it for: bringing an existing GIS project, its layers and data-entry forms into field collection. The official setup guide describes preparing a project in QGIS and transferring it locally or using QFieldCloud.

Before choosing: try a small project and its return trip to the office. Decide how your team will transfer files or sync changes, and check any cloud-service requirements separately.

SW Maps — mapped features, attributes and GIS exports

SW Maps is a free GIS and mobile mapping app. Its Android listing describes point, line and polygon collection with custom attributes and photos, plus exports including GeoPackage, KMZ, shapefiles and CSV.

Choose it for: a project where each mapped feature needs a record, such as an asset location with a photo and descriptive fields. External RTK-capable receivers can connect over Bluetooth or USB.

Before choosing: prepare the layers you need offline and verify the receiver connection. Open an exported sample in your office software to check geometry and attributes.

FieldGenius — dedicated survey instrument workflows

MicroSurvey FieldGenius runs on Android and Windows. Its product documentation describes GNSS and total-station workflows, coordinate geometry (COGO), map-based fieldwork and stakeout.

Choose it for: evaluating a dedicated field package around your survey instruments, especially when the workflow includes observations, linework and setting out design points.

Before choosing: confirm the exact instrument, Android controller, licence and required functions with the vendor. Use the available demo to check the complete workflow rather than relying on a product name alone.

Phone GPS and RTK are different tools

A phone can help you find a site or make a rough location record. Installing a surveying app does not, by itself, make the phone a centimetre-accurate instrument. GPS.gov explains that accuracy depends on the receiver, satellite geometry, obstructions and other conditions; smartphone positioning under open sky is typically at metre scale. Read GPS.gov’s accuracy explanation.

For an external RTK workflow, check the receiver connection, correction source and solution status. Also check the project coordinate system, antenna height and height reference. A point can look precise while being in the wrong datum or shifted by an incorrect setup.

Compare observations against known control and the tolerance required for the job. A mapped point or calculated polygon does not, on its own, establish a property boundary.

Five checks before your first job

  1. Write down the deliverable. Do you need a coordinate list, a CAD drawing, a GIS layer or stakeout instructions? Confirm the file format with whoever receives the job.
  2. Fix the coordinate settings. Record the datum, projection, zone, hemisphere and units. Check whether heights are ellipsoidal or tied to your project’s vertical reference. Try the WGS84 UTM-to-latitude/longitude converter for a coordinate check.
  3. Check a known calculation. Use a simple example with an independently known answer before trusting an imported point list. Check the easting/northing order and bearing convention.
  4. Rehearse field conditions. Test permissions, storage, battery use and any receiver connection. Try offline operation separately from online corrections; they are different requirements.
  5. Complete a small round trip. Capture or import a few points, export them, and reopen them in the receiving software. Confirm point names, coordinates, units and attributes before scaling up.

Common questions

Which Android app should a land surveyor start with?

Start with the job you need to finish. Land Surveyor by APPNEST is an option for coordinate calculations, traverse, curves and DXF work. QField fits a QGIS project workflow; SW Maps fits GIS feature collection; FieldGenius is an option for dedicated instrument-based fieldwork. Try your own sample job before choosing.

Is Land Surveyor by APPNEST free?

It is free to install from Google Play and contains ads and in-app purchases. Optional paid features and ad removal are listed in the app. Check Google Play for the current options in your region; receiver hardware and correction services are separate.

Can an Android phone replace an RTK receiver?

Installing an app does not turn the phone’s built-in GPS into an RTK rover. For the external-receiver workflow described here, you need compatible GNSS equipment, appropriate corrections and checks against known control. An RTK Fixed label alone does not verify the whole survey.

Can I use these apps without an internet connection?

Offline support depends on the specific task, project and app. Prepare local files and map layers, then test your exact workflow in airplane mode before leaving the office. Streaming NTRIP corrections requires a connection to the caster, even if your basemap is already stored on the device.

What should I check before exporting coordinates to CAD?

Check the coordinate reference system, units, point IDs, easting/northing order and height reference. Open a small exported sample in the receiving CAD software and compare a known point and distance before transferring the full job.
